If you are abroad and need to travel but cannot get a passport in time, you may be eligible to apply for an emergency travel document.

To be eligible, you must be a British citizen outside the UK, your passport must have been lost, stolen or damaged and you do not have enough time to renew or replace your passport before travel.

You must be able to provide proof of travel plans, such as flight bookings or detailed plans. An emergency travel document enables the holder to travel to their destination though a maximum of 5countries in addition to using it to return to the country they are applying from, if eligible.

Applications can be made online for a non refundable fee of £100. The emergency document is normally available for collection 2 working days after applying but can take longer depending on the circumstances (such as the age of the applicant or not providing the correct or sufficient supporting documents).
